Coordinated by Woodland staff and Sergeant Pat Bennett, who leads the Warren Township Police Department’s Community Affairs and Traffic Team, the gathering brought students and officers together around a familiar activity: coloring.
With crayons, markers and coloring pages spread across the tables, children had an opportunity to ask questions and get to know officers in a relaxed school setting. The shared activity helped students see police officers as approachable, friendly and trusted members of their community.
“Color with a Cop was a wonderful opportunity for our first graders to connect with local police officers in a fun and meaningful way,” said first-grade teacher Mrs. Casorio. “It tied in perfectly with our Week of Respect by reminding students of the importance of kindness, building positive relationships, and showing appreciation for the people who serve our community. It was great to see the students and officers enjoying the experience together!”
The visit connected the school’s Week of Respect message with an opportunity to practice kindness and communication. Rather than learning about community helpers only through classroom discussion, students spent time alongside officers, sharing supplies, conversations and their artwork.
For both students and officers, the event offered a chance to build familiarity through a simple, shared experience. Warren Township Schools described the gathering as a success, with participants enjoying their time together.
Activities such as Color with a Cop support the school’s efforts to build trust, belonging and an appreciation for community connections from an early age.
